Welcome to Exploring Music with KT!
Hello and welcome!
My name is Katie, pronounced KT, and I'm excited to share a space where we can explore music together. For me, music has always been a constant companion, a source of comfort, and a true passion. My journey with music began early on, but it was with the piano that I truly found my niche.
When I was 10 years old, growing up in Fairbanks, Alaska, I started taking private piano lessons with an elderly local teacher everyone called Miss Music. Her home in downtown Fairbanks was a cozy, welcoming place, and her purple upright piano was the first instrument I ever truly connected with. It was there that I learned the fundamentals of piano and began transforming written notes into sound.
After two years with Miss Music, I began studying with a new instructor who held a doctorate in music from the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF). For the next six years, I dedicated myself to learning from her, diving deep into technique, theory, and performance. While I've experimented with several other instruments over the years, including the guitar, violin, cello, and even the recorder, the piano is the one that has always felt like home.
Although my formal lessons ended when I graduated high school and started college, my relationship with music never did. Today, I still play the piano for the sheer joy of it. My musical tastes are incredibly varied, and you’ll find that I don't stick to just one genre. From classical to contemporary, rock to rap, my musical preferences change with my mood, my activity, and sometimes even the season. There's not much I won't listen to, as every type of music has a story to tell. I enjoy the quaint, yet sophisticated live music scene in Fairbanks.
On this blog, I want to share my musical passion with you. I hope my blog inspires you to find joy in music, too. Lately, the cooler Fall temperatures have me enjoying mostly folk rock. My song of the day The Mamas & The Papas - Dream A Little Dream of Me
Thank you for being here!

ReplyDeleteGreat description of the Fairbanks live music scene. I got to perform at Running Reindeer Ranch this summer. I don't stick to one genre of music either!! Welcome to the class.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful life you're leading Katie! Thank you for sharing bits and pieces of your journey with us. I would love to see more of your future adventures through this blog. Keep playing that piano, I'm sure you bring joy to others by doing so.
ReplyDeleteI love music for the comfort it brings as well. I have always wanted to play piano, and it is so cool that you have been doing it for so long. I also love the song "Dream a Little Dream of Me," a wonderful song choice.
ReplyDeleteThat picture is so cool, where is that!? I should learn to play the piano since it's related to mallet instruments; it's the actual playing technique that trips me up. What's your favorite piano piece? Excellent song choice! I love the drum kit part; the ride cymbal is my favorite.
ReplyDeleteHi Katie! I also play piano and I have taken lessons for a long time! I love the picture you chose to share, I find it so beautiful! I also love to listen to all different kinds of genre of music. I am definitely a person who listens to all kinds of music depending on my mood!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your page and your photos. You mentioned in your post that you learned how to play the piano from Miss Music and I also first learned from an elderly lady who lived down town named Miss Keller. I'm unsure if they may be the same person since I'm not aware if she had a nick name. Miss Keller made learning so much fun and she wouldn't mind teaching overtime. My son learned how to play from her as well and his lessons would go on for almost 2 hours, just getting lost in the moment. The piano always holds a very special place in my heart, thank you for sharing your experience!
ReplyDeleteHello Katie, I find it fascinating that you said you were able to connect with an instrument and took such a liking to it. Not only that, but you were able to keep playing even after no longer taking lessons!
